IT error causes 16,000 coronavirus cases to be missed in daily figures

Public Health England have said that a technical glitch leading to nearly 16,000 coronavirus cases being unreported, has delayed efforts to trace contacts of people who had received positive tests.

Although the issue has now been resolved, it does mean that the daily case totals reported on the government’s dashboard over the last week have been lower than the true number.

Senior public health officials in the north west of England have said that a large proportion of the unreported cases are from the area. Cities such as Manchester and Liverpool already have among the highest infection rates in the country, and are at about ten times the national average.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the data had been “lost” and “truncated”, but went on to say that all people who had tested positive had been contacted and the tracers were “now working through all the contacts”.
