New ‘disturbing’ issues found at Shropshire baby death trust
Nearly half of all serious incidents at a hospital trust earlier this year were related to maternity care, a situation which has been described as “disturbing” amid wider safety fears.
Around 1,900 maternity cases were already under review at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust, but data shows that 45 per cent of serious incidents in July and 25 per cent in August involved maternity patients.
Although the trust have said it is acting transparently in reporting issues so that they can be investigated, critics have expressed concern that events are still occurring even during the investigation.
The trust’s maternity standards are also being investigated separately under the Ockenden Review, a government-commissioned probe ad the largest ever into maternity care within the NHS.
Louise Barlett, chief executive of the trust, said that they were committed to always acting transparently and reporting issues, including in maternity care, where they can be properly investigated.
She added “However, as the report clearly sets out, we are constantly reviewing the measures and actions taken to ensure that we make further improvements in these areas.
“The Badgernet paperless maternity record was introduced in our hospitals in August and we have already successfully enrolled 500 women onto the system.”
