New cancer detecting blood tests trialled in West Midlands
New blood tests are being trialled in the West Midlands in a drive to detect cancers early and before symptoms appear.
The trial, which will take place in a mobile clinic, aims to recruit 140,000 volunteers in eight regions of England.
The blood tests are expected to be able to detect over 50 different cancers and letters inviting people aged 50 to 77 are being sent out by the NHS.
The Galleri test works by locating chemical changes in fragments of genetic code that leak from tumours into the bloodstream. The test is being run by King’s College London and Cancer Research UK in partnership with the NHS and healthcare company Grail, which has developed the Galleri test.
Initial results are expected by 2023 and if successful, NHS England and NHS Improvement intend to extend the rollout to a further one million people in the following two years.
