Artificial Intelligence database matches cancer patients to trials earlier
An AI database will be used to give cancer patients earlier access to clinical trials.
Health officials expect it will also aid breakthroughs in cancer research and improve patient outcomes.
Weston NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospitals Bristol will be the first to use the Trial Navigator before it is rolled out across the west of England.
The new technology, which was launched by NHS Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon and Gloucestershire (SWAG) Cancer Alliance and Inspirata, works by using the trust’s existing database to locate studies most likely to represent a patient-fit for clinical evaluation.
Dr Helen Winter, clinical director of SWAG Cancer Alliance, said “a lack of trial information” can contribute to under-representation in cancer studies.
She went on to say “We hope that this solution will afford both clinicians and patients in the region a greater choice of potential treatment options.”
The alliance said the system will also help to build-back cancer services following the delays brought on by the pandemic.
