Leeds A&E departments see ‘record numbers’ of patients
Leeds residents are being urged to think twice before turning up at the city’s accident and emergency departments, as doctors say they are coming under increasing pressure.
According to NHS Leeds Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), “record numbers” of patients are arriving at St James’s Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, saying that the hospitals are seeing around 80 more patients each day, an increase of 20 per cent.
There are also currently 125 patients with Covid-19 in hospital in the city, which is the equivalent of five full wards.
Dr Sarah Davey, the trust’s clinical director for urgent care, says “Over the last few months, the number of patients seeking treatment at our emergency departments has increased considerably.
“The most urgent and life-threatening cases take priority, which means that unfortunately people coming in with less urgent issues are experiencing longer waiting times and could be treated elsewhere.”
People with non-urgent cases are being urged to check with NHS 111 before going to hospital.
