NHS data shows cancer services continue to struggle
Latest data released from the NHS shows that around 21 per cent of patients waited for longer than two weeks for a check-up with a cancer specialist in April following an urgent referral from a GP, and 35 per cent waited for longer than the target time of two months for treatment.
Professor Pat Price, co-founder of Catch Up With Cancer, said “It defies all reason that government can look at these cancer statistics and not see a crisis. We are desperately short of treatment capacity.
“Increasing diagnosis means nothing of all we do is pile backlog patients onto sky-high waiting lists.”
However, Professor Stephen Powis, national medical director of NHS England, praised “hard-working NHS staff”, adding that significant progress was being made.
However, he did warn that there was no doubt” the NHS was still facing pressures, including the continuation of an increasing number of Covid patients.
