NHS in England to receive £5.9bn to reduce waiting lists
The government has announced the NHS in England is to receive an additional £5.9bn. The money is to be used to help clear the unprecedented backlog of people waiting for scans and tests, which has been made worse by the pandemic, and also to purchase equipment and improve IT.
Health bodies have welcomed the latest pledge, but said it would not solve the problem of staff shortages.
More than five million people are currently waiting for NHS hospital treatment in England, with hundreds of thousands having waited for longer than a year.
NHS Providers, which speaks for hospital and other NHS trusts, warned the health service needed more staff to deliver services.
The NHS Confederation, a body representing healthcare leaders, said the funding “falls short of what is needed to get services completely back on track.”
