NHS to recommend weight loss jab
Adults who struggle with their weight could soon be offered a weekly injection to help shed unhealthy fat.
The semaglutide treatment, known as Wegovy, helps people feel fuller so that they eat less and are not as hungry. In recent trials, used alongside exercise and a health diet, it helped obese people lose a tenth of their body weight, around two stone on average.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence is recommending it should become available on the NHS.
Obesity currently affects around one in four adults in the UK and increases the risk of other serious health conditions.
NICE’s Helen Knight, said “We know that management of overweight and obesity is one of the biggest challenges our health service is facing.
“It is a lifelong condition that needs medical intervention, has psychological and physical effects, and can affect quality of life.”
