Study claims swab test could detect chances of having preterm baby
Experts claim a cheek swab test of mothers and fathers-to-be could determine whether their baby will be born prematurely.
Researchers at Washington State University say the findings would eventually lead to a test that can spot pregnancies that are likely to end prematurely, allowing doctors to intervene early.
Premature births are a leading cause of death among newborns. Survivors are also more likely to develop future health problems, such a seizures and disabilities.
The study involved cheek swabs being taken from 40 sets of parents nine days after their baby was born, half of which had a baby born prematurely, while the others were carried to full-term.
Lab analysis of the samples showed mothers of premature babies had 100 unique biomarkers, which could enable them to be identified early. Distinct epigenetic signatures were also spotted in swabs of fathers, although there were fewer.
However, study author Professor Michael Skinner, said biomarkers were present in all parents whose babies were born early.
Professor Skinner said of the results “Although we may not be able to fix the problem, if we know that it’s going to develop because of these diagnostics, we can treat it. This could help with the transition from reactionary medicine to preventive medicine.”
